IGA Club of the Month: Bonnet Bay FC
We are pleased to announce that the IGA Club of the Month for May is Bonnet Bay FC in the Sutherland Shire. Since its establishment in 1982 Bonnet Bay FC has become an integral part of its local community.
This culminated in April this year when Scott Morrison (Federal Member for Cook and Minister for Social Services) officially opened its new clubhouse extensions which provide a wonderful base for the club’s operations and potentially for the wider community to run events.
At the opening Mayor Councillor Kent Johns described the building as a “community hub” and expressed his delight that the club had not required financial support from council.
Fundraising efforts over the last 5 years combined with the support of local sponsors contributed over $250,000 to the project.
Additional support from State Government grants and the Sutherland Shire Football Association assisted further in reducing the cost of the project.
Club President Peter Burgess played a key role in this project.
“Our sub-committee was able to draw on specific skills and resources within the club with a team of professionals including an architect, lawyer, surveyor, engineer and various tradespeople including builders, roofers, glaziers, plumbers and electricians who were already involved in the club who had the time to be able to contribute to their community.
“An example of this is a couple of young members who play in our senior teams that have their own building business, Upright Carpentry & Building.
“They were able to contribute their time, energy and skills to help build a clubhouse that they will in turn be able to make use of throughout their football career.”
A club with a strong vision for the future, Bonnet Bay FC has already earmarked a couple of new projects they would like to explore that will enhance the profile of football and sport within the community.
This includes a comprehensive yet cost-effective year round player development program focused on boys and girls from Under 6s to Under 14s. For more information visit bonnetbayfc.com.
Football NSW and IGA would like to recognise the fundraising effort and community engagement of Bonnet Bay FC by rewarding them with $500 in IGA vouchers.
